Sealed Lead Acid Battery Frequently Asked Questions

Question: How to charge SLA Batteries?
Answer:
To charge your SLA batteries follow these steps:
  • Remove the SLA battery.
  • Turn on your smart battery charger. Using a smart charger optimizes the charge rate, making sure your battery gets the right charge and is charged for the correct time. Your SLA battery already contains a small charge, but you need to charge it for at least 8 hours; longer is better and a smart charger will do this for you.
  • Allow the SLA battery to charge until the charge indicator light illuminates. This confirms charging has stopped and your battery is ready for use.
  • Turn off the charger and disconnect the two cable clamps from the battery terminals..

Question: How to test AGM Batteries?
Answer:
To test your AGM batteries follow these steps:

  • Turn on your multimeter.
  • Connect the red cable from the multimeter to the positive terminal on your AGM battery adn the black cable to the negative terminal.
  • A fully charged AGM battery has an output voltage slightly higher than the voltage on the battery to allow for voltage resistance in the battery cables. However, if the reading is more than 2 volts below the listed battery voltage you will need to recharge your battery. Once charged, test the voltage again, then leave it for several hours and retest it. If the voltage reading drops more than about 1 or 2 volts, you may need to consider getting a replacement battery.
